Patty and Scott Rocklage Fund Labs Renovation at MIT
Scott Rocklage did his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was privileged to have been guided by one of the greatest chemistry minds in the world, Professor Richard R. Schrock. Years after Scott graduated, the institute’s Department of Chemistry found itself constrained of funds to renovate a couple of its labs. In 2016, the then H.O.D, Ms. Sylvia Ceyer, approached Scott and Patty and requested them to fund the said renovation. The couple gladly accepted to fund the renovation project. The renovations were completed in July last year. Scott and Patty were invited in the department to inspect and to receive a token of appreciation from the department.
Dick DeVos has done his part to support local Grand Rapids charities and public services, and he’s been listed in various magazines as one of the most generous businessmen in Michigan. Generosity has been a trait of the DeVos family that its patriarch Richard DeVos has long embraced as a part of his life. Dick and his wife Betsy started their foundation in 1992, and it’s through there that they’ve given money not just to political candidates, but far more to local private and public schools, hospitals, family counseling services, churches and civic organizations. Dick and Betsy decided to disclose the figures during Betsy’s confirmation hearing for Secretary of Education, and it’s now estimated that they have given $139 million in lifetime giving.
There really is no value that can be put on the work that Dick has done in the Grand Rapids community. He’s helped bring in jobs through his business leadership at Amway Corporation from 1993 to 2002, and as Chairman of The Windquest Group where he presently works. Amway Corporation is a multilevel marketing company that Richard DeVos Sr. founded about 50 years ago, and Dick helped grow the company into many foreign markets during his time as CEO. The Windquest Group invests in many alternative energy and local businesses, and Dick and Betsy have recently acquired the majority of shares to Coppercraft Distillery, a Holland, MI brewery.
Dick DeVos and Betsy’s philanthropic work has been primarily driven by education reform. They have fought for high education standards and the freedoms of school of choice in Michigan laws, and at one time attempted to pass a voucher and tax credit program for private schools. Dick and Betsy have donated to many private schools including Potter’s House Christian School and Grand Rapids Christian School. Dick even helped start a charter school where young people can go to learn about aviation and mechanics at the Gerald R. Ford Airport called the West Michigan Aviation Academy.
Dick and Betsy have not only given to Republican party candidates and conservative organizations like Heritage Foundation and Hudson Institute, they have also run for office. Dick ran for and won election to the Michigan State Board of Education in 1990, and later ran for governor but lost in the 2006 Michigan governor’s race. Betsy is formerly the Chairperson of the Michigan Republican Party and was selected upon Donald Trump’s presidential election to head the Department of Education.
